Sprinter Injector Overhaul & Performance Upgrade


I’ve been driving my Sprinter for approximately 100,000 km, and I had never performed a full Sprinter injector overhaul since I bought it. I’m not sure if it had been done previously, but initially, everything seemed fine. Over the past 100,000 km, I had removed the injectors a few times, replaced the O-rings, cleaned visible carbon deposits, and continued driving. Early on, the injectors were very tight, but over time I got used to removing and reinstalling them without issue.
Now, after 100,000 km, it was time for a proper injector maintenance: carefully removing the injectors, lining them up, and taking them to a professional diesel service center.
Sprinter T1N / 901 / 903 Compatibility

Why a Sprinter Injector Overhaul Was Needed
Recently, I noticed a drop in engine performance, especially under load or during climbs. Even without checking the gauge, the engine sound and fumes entering the cabin indicated suboptimal operation. At night, in traffic, I could clearly see smoke from the exhaust if a car followed closely. Even on flat roads, the Sprinter emitted smoke continuously, regardless of load.
After researching local diesel injector service centers, I chose Dizelmak. I removed the injectors, transported them carefully, and prepared them for professional servicing.
Tip: When requesting a price for injector overhaul, ask whether you need to bring the vehicle as well. Newer vehicles often require injector registration in the ECU after overhaul.


Injector Testing Procedure
At the service center, the injectors were initially cleaned and pre-tested. Each nozzle and return line was measured. The testing simulates engine conditions: high-pressure fuel line, return lines, and electrical connections are all accounted for, so the injectors operate as if installed in the engine.
Damaged or worn components that could not be adjusted were replaced with new parts, and the injectors were re-tested. After multiple cycles, balanced results were achieved, and each injector received a Bosch test approval label, which verifies compliance with Bosch standards and includes details for ECU coding. Essentially, each injector received its “ID card” confirming it passed testing.


Preparing the Sprinter for Reinstallation
The injectors came out of the test looking brand-new. I cleaned the injector housings, replaced all O-rings and studs, and upgraded the return hoses with high-quality replacements. While I was at it, I thoroughly cleaned the turbo lines, intercooler, and manifold of any old oil residue. Even the vapor separator and manifold gaskets were replaced.
Fuel connections were reinstalled, and bleeding the system was much easier this time using a manual hand pump. Air bubbles were removed from the lines until fuel flowed from the last injector, reducing strain on the battery and starter motor.

Injector Reinstallation and First Start
After installing the injectors and completing fuel priming, I started the engine. The difference was immediately noticeable: smoother response, no smoke, and a powerful, clean engine sound — almost like replacing the engine with a larger one.

Initial testing over a 4,000 km route was extremely positive:
- No smoke under load
- Stable idle
- No unusual odors
- Excellent fuel efficiency (~5–6 L/100 km)





Additional Performance Enhancements
To maximize the benefits of the injector overhaul, I also updated and cleaned:
- Air filter
- Turbo hoses
- Sensors (recently replaced)
- Manifold O-rings
These improvements ensure optimal airflow and turbo pressure, allowing the ECU to operate the injectors efficiently. With the injectors overhauled, the engine responds faster, cleaner, and more consistently than ever.
